Plame's story is a modern odyssey, a cautionary tale that should make Americans think twice before sacrificing their patriots.” -- Robert Baer, author & former CIA case officer This week's guest on REPORT FROM SANTA FE is Valerie Plame Wilson, a former United States CIA Operations Officer and the author of “Fair Game: My Life as a Spy, My Betrayal by the White House,” a memoir detailing her career and the events leading up to her resignation from the CIA. “Fair Game” has been described as the historic and unvarnished account of the personal and international consequences of telling truth to power. This riveting memoir was also made into a movie starring Naomi Watts and Sean Penn. The Plame Affair (also known as the CIA Leak Scandal, the CIA Leak Grand Jury Investigation, and Plamegate) involved the identification of Valerie Plame Wilson as a covert Central Intelligence Agency officer by Richard Armitage. Mrs. Wilson's relationship with the CIA was formerly classified information. This disclosure led to a Special Prosecutor, a lengthy grand jury investigation, and the five-count indictment of then high-ranking Bush Administration official Lewis “Scooter” Libby, who was finally convicted on 4 counts of obstruction of justice, perjury and making false statements. President Bush commuted Libby's sentence. Historians will long study this dark chapter in American history. Robert Baer, author and former CIA case officer, observed “Plame spent a courageous and honorable career on the front lines of terrorism only to come home and meet the ultimate betrayal, her own country – unethical politicians and unscrupulous journalists. Plame's story is a modern odyssey, a cautionary tale that should make Americans think twice before sacrificing their patriots.” Highly trained in the field of nuclear proliferation, Plame Wilson continues this important work openly today and is a leader in Global Zero, an international movement to eliminate the global nuclear threat. She participated in the film “Countdown to Zero,” a documentary about the escalating nuclear arms race. Plame Wilson discusses the impact of the economic downturn on nuclear disarmament, internationally and here in New Mexico with the deferment of construction of the $6 billion plutonium pits factory at Los Alamos National Lab. Currently she is co-writing spy thrillers with the accomplished author Sarah Lovett. Their first novel “Blow Back” will come out at the end of the year. -- Quote: “With all the problems in the world today, of which there are many, if we don't get this one right, none of the others matter. I deeply believe that if we continue on the path we are, it is just a question of “when” not “if.” So we have a moment, an opportunity, a moment in time, to change direction.” -- Valerie Plame Wilson on the global nuclear threat
