Wenonah Hauter

Air Dates: November 5-7, 2016

This week's guest on REPORT FROM SANTA FE is Wenonah Hauter, longtime public interest advocate working on energy, environmental, and agricultural issues.

Hauter is the founder and Executive Director of Food and Water Watch, a DC-based watchdog organization focused on corporate and government accountability relating to food, water, and common resources. She has worked and written extensively on food, water, energy, and environmental issues at the national, state, and local levels.

Over the past decade, a new and controversial energy extraction method known as hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, has rocketed to the forefront of U.S. energy production. With fracking, millions of gallons of water, dangerous chemicals, and sand are injected under high pressure deep into the earth, fracturing hard rock to release oil and gas.

Hauter's newest book "Frackopoly: The Battle For the Future of Energy and the Environment” is an extensive history of the fracking industry over the past 100 years, full of detailed research and scientific citations. With a wealth of new data, “Frackopoly” outlines the need for a real debate on fossil fuels, energy, and environmental problems.

Haurter also wrote "Foodopoly: The Battle Over the Future of Food and Farming in America.”Blending history, reporting, and a deep understanding of American farming and food production, “Foodopoly” is the revealing account of the business behind the meat, vegetables, grains, and milk that most Americans eat every day.
